How to edit an existing query ?

This article explains all the available options to manage and reorganize existing queries efficiently.

Written by Marion Magnan

In Trajaan, you cannot directly edit the text of an existing query once it has been created.
However, you can modify the labeling structure associated with that query, or completely remove the query and recreate it if needed.

What can be modified on an existing query?

You can:

  • ✅ Add or remove labels

  • ✅ Change the label assigned to a query

  • ✅ Rename labels or columns

  • ✅ Move your labeling logic to another column

  • ✅ Delete a query entirely

You cannot:

  • ❌ Edit the query text itself

  • ❌ Modify the original keyword directly

If the query itself needs to change, the recommended approach is to:

  1. Delete the existing query

  2. Create a new query with the correct wording

  3. Re-apply the appropriate labels and rules

How to modify labels associated with a query

There are several ways to update the labeling attached to existing queries.

Option 1 — Manually remove or change labels

You can directly edit labels from the query table.

To remove a label:

  • Click on the assigned label and deselect it.

  • The label will be deactivated or removed from the query

To assign a different label:

  • Select one or multiple queries

  • Assign another existing label

  • Or create a new label in a dedicated column

This is the fastest method for small manual adjustments.

Option 2 — Manage labels from the column settings

You can manage labels directly from the column configuration.

Access label management:

  • Click the label icon next to the column name

  • Or click the three dots menu (⋯) → View labels

From there, you can:

  • Rename labels

  • Delete labels

  • Add tags

  • Reorganize your label structure

  • Review existing rules

This is useful when you want to clean or standardize your taxonomy across a project.

Option 3 — Update the rules attached to a label

If your queries are automatically labeled using rules, you can modify the rule logic instead of editing queries manually.

To access rules:

  • Open the relevant column

  • Click the three dots menu (⋯)

  • Select Active rules

Rules allow you to automatically assign queries to labels based on conditions such as:

  • Contains

  • Does not contain

  • Combined keyword logic

Example:

  • contains “monster” AND contains “energy”

  • contains “red bull” AND not contains “sugar free”

Updating a rule will automatically impact all matching queries linked to that label.

⚠️ Note: It is currently not possible to directly move a rule from one column to another.
However, you can duplicate a rule and assign it to another column.

Reorganizing your query structure

If you want to completely redefine how your queries are organized, the easiest solution may be to:

  1. Delete the existing column

  2. Create a new column

  3. Add updated labels and rules

This is particularly useful when:

  • Your taxonomy has changed

  • Your labels are no longer consistent

  • You want to rebuild a cleaner structure

Ways to add or reassign labels

Trajaan offers several methods to label your queries depending on your workflow.

Auto-labeling (AI-powered)

Automatically suggests labels based on frequent terms detected in your dataset.

Ideal for:

  • Large keyword lists

  • Fast first-pass organization

💡 Tip: Always review AI-generated labels before validating them.

Import company rules

You can import existing company labeling rules to:

  • Keep naming conventions consistent

  • Align teams and regions

  • Scale your taxonomy faster

Create a manual labeling column

You can also create an empty column and manually assign labels.

Best for:

  • Smaller datasets

  • Custom analyses

  • Specific segmentation needs

💡 Tip: Keep naming conventions consistent to simplify filtering and reporting.

Best practices for label management

To keep your dataset organized and scalable:

  • Use clear and consistent naming conventions

  • Avoid duplicate or overlapping labels

  • Keep labels short and descriptive

  • Regularly review your taxonomy with your team

  • Include synonyms and spelling variations in your rules

A well-structured labeling system makes dashboards easier to read and insights easier to interpret.

FAQ

Can I edit the text of a query?

No.
Once created, a query itself cannot be edited.

If you need to change the wording:

  1. Delete the existing query

  2. Create a new one

Can I modify labels attached to a query?

Yes.
You can:

  • Remove labels

  • Add new labels

Is AI auto-labeling reliable?

Auto-labeling is designed to provide a strong starting point, but we recommend reviewing suggestions before validating them to ensure accuracy and consistency.
